Home Compostable vs Industrial Compostable Packaging

Published 2026-02-10

What the distinction means for customer instructions and supplier documentation.

Industrial compostable

Industrial composting typically refers to managed facilities with controlled conditions. Packaging designed only for industrial routes should not imply home compostability.

Home compostable

Home compostability targets a managed home compost environment and is associated with stricter testing expectations in credible programmes.

Market realities

Disposal routes vary by region. Your customer-facing guidance should reflect what is realistic where you sell — not generic global slogans.
